character.
name: Doctor Percival Cox nickname(s): Perry, Per, Coxer, Per-Per, Coxy, (make note: if you call him anything OTHER THAN Doctor Cox, he will likely not answer.) pb: John C. McGinley fairy tale & character: Scrubs / Dr. Perry Cox age: 47. office: A211 preferred method of treatment: Lots and lots of medication, and a harsh dose of reality. Dr. Cox is never one to hold back his opinion, especially when he questions the diagnosis of a patient. specializes in: Anything really, Doctor Cox loves a challenge, there is a method to his maddness. He can be understanding when it comes to hit work. He likes to work with patients that have both physical ailments due to their mental health. He would prefer more independant patients, ones who aren't too needy, and have low self esteem. personality: Doctor Cox is very much a says it how he see's it. He has been described in past jobs like being Gregory House, his boss - Bob Kelso going as far as referencing him saying, "Oh Perry, you are so edgy and cantankerous; like House without the limp." He is never one to hold back an opinion of someone. Dr. Cox is the sarcastic, bitter and rather cynical. Dr. Cox routinely rants at and belittles all those around him, though his rough treatment of the "newbies" is intended as conditioning for the rigors and horrors of hospital life, as well as an outlet for Cox's frustration in his own life. It is occasionally implied that he is secretly proud of these new interns and thinks they have the potential to become great doctors.
Dr. Cox is sarcastic and misanthropic, with a quick, cruel wit. He is also very concerned about the way he is perceived in the hospital, often making very illogical and self-destructive decisions in order to keep his "bad boy" image. He works out extensively and thus is physically fit; he shows off his physique by lounging around his apartment shirtless.
Even though he often complains about his job and calls Cheshire Crossing a "dump", work is one of the only things he truly loves. Despite his brilliance, Cox has failed, for the most part, to rise up the professional ladder because he refuses to accept help from others and will not "play the game". Cox releases his anger once a year, when he flies off the handle about some minor event at work and goes out on a drinking binge, coming back the next day as if nothing had happened.
Yet, despite all this anger and rage, he is VERY good at hiding his true feelings, which include: Being deeply effected by his patients. Even if he comes off as a rather abrasive man his cruelty is just so people won't get close to him. He truly does care, underneath all that cynicsm, and sarcasm.
history: Doctor Cox grew up in a rather abusive family in Pittsburgh. His father was an alcoholic, and during his rages it was hard to control him. Knowing that he never wanted to be like his father, Perry gradtuated from college, and recieved degrees, and ultimately became a skilled medical doctor.
Being hired at the hospital he interned at - Sacred Heart, Perry became known as one of the hardest doctors to satisfy there. During his time at Sacred Heart he met a woman who was basically the female version of him. Jordan Sullivan was both beautiful, and full of cynicsm, and sarcasm. She could handle Perry's barbs, and rude comments, and then turn it around with just as much spite.
During his time at Sacred Heart, Doctor Cox was also assigned a young intern named John Dorian... or as his friends called him JD. Instantly, Perry saw so much in himself with JD, which is really why he started treating JD like crap. Calling him girl's names, and undermining his knowledge, claiming he didn't know anything. When J.D. first meets Jordan, he doesn't know of her and Doctor Cox's relationship, and they sleep together. Eventually Cox finds out, and J.D. is afraid of losing him, but in the end, they get through it. Cox and Jordan divorced shortly after The "Peter Fisher" incident and maintained an acrimonious relationship, which included a settlement involving Cox's paying alimony and agreeing to provide Jordan with sex whenever she wants it. Eventually they rekindle their relationship and continue living together. Ted Buckland, Sacred Heart's lawyer, reveals that the pair are not in fact legally divorced because of a paperwork error. After initially welcoming this change, the two get properly divorced as the revelation was beginning to undermine the positive aspects of their relationship. The two celebrate their divorce and maintain their unusual married-but-not relationship.
Perry Cox was also best friends with Jordan's brother, Ben, who was diagnosed with leukaemia. Thanks to Dr Cox, Ben's disease goes into remission. However, soon after that, Ben dies of cardiac arrest while under J.D.'s care. Perry never gets over such a loss, and after much thought decides to leave Sacred Heart in hopes of persuing a carreer where deaths are less likely.
Getting hired at Cheshire Crossing, it seems he has not changed all too much, only the location. Yet, it seems a little better without "Penelope" (JD) there, and his second half "Ghandi" (Turk). Cox is able to flourish into a phychiatrist, taking up the role in the hospital as the more blunt, and brutal doctor.
examples: [First person:] (Doctor Cox's journal is completely private)
Huh. I don't write in journals. I never really had a need to "vent" on paper, that usually made me mad.... because it would still be there for me to read over later. At least verbally venting it would be out in the open and I wouldn't have to hear it ever again.
I wonder if Jack made it through his first day of second grade. He'll be fine. I know. His mother can survive through anything... Hell, the woman is still standing after all that plastic surgery. Might as well make her a walking mannequin.
That new intern won't leave me alone. The stupid Sally-Anne insists that I am his "role model". What kind of role model am I? I drink far too much, I'm not a nice person... and dammit, why the hell would anyone want to look up to me? Idiots.
Barbie with the cart said that I was a "cold-hearted bastard"... I ended up pointing out the fact that she is a nurse with no motivation in life to recieve a better degree, and therefore covers up her low esteem with make up. A bit mean? Yeah, I know... but it's honest.
Dammit, I'm getting pages again, "Gloria" probably just needs a signature. God, why do they have to bother me?!
